All You Need To Know About Paracord 550

If you love adventure, especially like to do survival activities just for fun, then Paracord is a must-have. This unique cord is ideal to be used in different situations as it is available in a plethora of grades. You can select the one that will work best for your purpose. Paracord is also called by different names such as Parachute cord, type III cord, and even Paracord 550.

Paracord 550 has a great tensile strength irrespective of the fact that it has a relatively small weight. All credit goes to seven inner strands which are further made from two smaller strands. These smaller strands are then further strengthened by a nylon sheath that is constructed from 32 strands that are woven together.  Another important feature of this cord is its availability in multiple colors, shapes, and sizes. You can easily find it in any form whenever you need it.

Materials

Paracord is available in two materials- Nylon and Polyester. Both these materials have the same tensile strength which means that both these materials can withstand 550 pounds of force to break. Former military people used to prefer nylon just because they find it a little more natural as compared to polyester which is known to have a plastic feel. But if you want to choose one among them based on a higher degree of flexibility, then nylon slashes down the polyester by a few points.

Another reason why Paracord has become popular is because both its varieties rot or mildew resistant. This makes them a reliable option and can be used for years or even decades.

Types of Paracord

In addition to standard grade Paracord 550, which is also known as Type III, there are other types of Paracord as well. These include:

  •         Type I: This is the weakest Paracord with a breaking strength of only 95 pounds. It is relatively lightweight.
  •         Type IA: It is more like Type I as it is also not very strong. It has tensile strength that can accommodate around 100 pounds. The length per pound obtained is 265 feet.
  •         Type IIA: This has a slightly lower breaking strength and can manage 225 pounds of force without breaking. This is also lightweight as compared to the top variant. You can expect about 225 feet of cord per pound.
  •         Type IV: This one is strong and can manage up to 750 pounds of pressure without breaking. It is relatively heavy and you can obtain about 165 feet of cord per pound.
  •         Last, but not least Paracord 550, which is the top variety of cord with excellent tensile strength.
