List Of Top Bowlers In Ashes Of All Time

The term “ashes” became popular after the Australian team defeated England on 29th August 1882 at the Oval. Since then, both teams have played against each other to become the ultimate test team in the world. Three hundred twenty-five tests have happened in the ashes series, where Australia holds the edge. England compromised on 106 trials, but 89 matches between them resulted in a draw.

Many batters, bowlers, and all-rounders so far in ashes history played well and later emerged as heroes to help their team win or end it as a draw. Some are stand-out performers who are remembered for their heroics. Without them, the ashes series is incomplete. They made their team proud and understood the importance of the test format in cricket. They are the reason why people enjoy watching test matches still in the era of T20.

In this article, we are talking about the top bowlers of the ashes cricket whose performances are still remembered by all. They have proved that cricket is not only about batting; it is the bowling which makes the entire experience rich and appealing.

Shane Warne

This legendary name in cricket history does not need any introduction. After rattling the wickets of England’s Mike Gatting on the very first delivery in ashes in his career, which was later declared as the “ball of the century”, Warne always had the upper hand against the English batters. Throughout the entire 90s till the 2000s, until the last test of his career, he kept the English batters confused with his long list of tricks and sometimes he played with their minds, which baffled the English batters.

In 2007 which was the last test, he helped Australia to win the ashes series 5-0 and claimed the first ever whitewash against England. He ended his career by taking 195 wickets only against England at an average of 23.35, including five-wicket hauls 11 times and four times ten-wicket hauls in a single match. In 2005, he took 40 wickets in total, but it was still the only ashes he lost in his career.

Dennis Lillee

The most fearsome pace bowler from Australia, Dennis Lillee, took 355 wickets in his test career, among which 167 only against England. He was just like another hot-blooded quick from Australia; sometimes, he used to become quite aggressive against the English batters.

In his first ashes series, Lillee took 31 wickets at an outstanding average of 17.67; in his second ashes, he took 25 wickets with Jeff Thomson, who also took 31 wickets, helping the Australia team to win the series by 4-0. After not a very long time, Lillee helped the team again in the following summer ashes to retain the shes crown by taking seven wickets in the first inning of the very first match on England soil. In 1967-68 Lillee’s 11 wickets against England helped Australia to win a one-match test series.

Glenn McGrath

After Dennis Lillee, Glenn McGrath, along with Shane Warne, made the life of English batter like hell. With his accuracy of length and swinging the ball in both directions, Glenn McGrath became a serious threat to every English batter. He took 563 test wickets in his career; among that, 157 were only in the ashes series at an average of just 20.92. This proves how dominant he was against the England team in his time.

McGrath was pretty good against England, but his favourite wicket among all English batters was Mike Atherton, who was the captain of England at that time. He took his wicket 19 times in 17 tests. It was because of McGrath that the Aussies could continue their winning streak of 5-0. McGrath was the one who was responsible for taking 21 wickets which increased their probability of winning the Ashes against the powerful opponent team of England. Since it was the last match that McGrath played for him, it was either “go big or go home” many cricket fanatics worldwide still remember his fantastic play in the Ashes series.

Ian Botham

From his test debut, where he took 5/76 against Australia in the iconic Trent Bridge ground in 1977, Ian Botham of England became a severe threat for the Australian side. Ian Botham ended with 148 wickets against Australia and became the fourth-highest wicket-taker in England against Australia.

Ian Botham is still remembered by all cricket enthusiasts worldwide because of his heroics in the 1981 ashes, also referred to as “Botham’s Ashes”. In that series, people witnessed his all-round ability, scoring 399 runs along with 34 wickets. His 149 runs not out innings changed the whole tone of that series, and England won the ashes by 3-1. It was the most iconic series in the whole of ashes history to date. The 1978-79 ashes were his most successful series against Australia in his career as he had 23 wickets and helped the England team to win by 5-1.

Bob Willis

Not the quickest or even not the most talented bowler in Australia-England series history, but still, Bob Willis is on number five in the list of most successful bowlers in the history of ashes. In his entire test career, he took 325 wickets, among which 128 were against Australia at an outstanding bowling average of 26.14.

His career-best ashes record was undoubtedly the 8/43 in the Headingley test in 1981, which is still considered one of the best bowling spells in the test history. Bob Willis, though called the 19/90(including both the innings of the match) of Jim Laker’s spell against Australia one of the best bowling spells in cricketing history.

In the 1982 ashes, apart from Botham’s 149 runs not out innings, Willis’s spell against the Australians also changed the whole course of that iconic series.

This is the list of the most successful bowlers in the ashes’ history. They are the most prominent names, making this series the most iconic test series in the world, and it continues to date.
