We all have our comfort items. If you think about it, many of these are frivolous wants and not needs. But one man’s gold is another’s poison, and if you’re like one of the 33 miners trapped 700 metres underground in The 33, you’ll likely be dreaming of a great many “needs”.

In the movie, the miners, whose chief Mario Sepulveda is played by Antonio Banderas, are given food, clothes and other items through a borehole for 69 days before finally being rescued. Here’s what we think some personality types might want, if they’re trapped like the 33 men.

THE CLEAN FREAK

This is a no-brainer – definitely underwear. Apparently, there is a joke among National Servicemen – or perhaps they do practise it (eww!) – that each underwear can be worn at least twice. They would just turn it inside out and wear it again. Hmm.

THE GAMBLER

For this person who likes to take his chances – I mean, he already has got nothing to lose since he survived an accident and is still alive in a dank and dark underground hole – it’s either a set of mahjong tiles or a deck of cards. If he’s the sociable sort, then the latter for sure as more people can play at any one time, but make it a waterproof set, please.

HARDCORE GAMER

For the serious gaming enthusiast, it has got to be a game console. Of course, if one isn’t trapped underground, the perfect option is the Xbox One or Playstation 4, but for optimal portable playing pleasure, Engadget recommends the Sony PlayStation Vita, with the Nintendo New 3DS coming a close second in its review of portable consoles. An important consideration is battery life, and the Vita scores in that area, while the 3DS offers playable 3D games. Regardless, please remember the battery pack!

CHOCOHOLIC

Chocolate isn’t that hard to find nowadays, but what kind of chocolate is the question. Should the choc addict ask for something that might not necessarily be of the best quality or expensive, but might bring back good memories, such as Kit Kat or Ferrero Rocher? Or should the chocoholic ask for a refined and branded chocolate, such as Lindt or Godiva? Well, whatever it is, make it a double portion, pronto!

THE LADY

It goes that Coco Chanel, she who created the iconic perfume Chanel No. 5, once said, “A woman who doesn’t wear perfume has no future.” And to add to that, in the 1950s, starlet Marilyn Monroe apparently said in response when she was asked what she wore to bed, “Five drops of Chanel No. 5.” Well, that settles it then – a bottle of good perfume for the lady, please.

Well, what’s important is to be able to share whatever little comforts one might have with the entire group, especially in such a dire situation where men would literally kill to survive. In the movie, which is based on a real life event in 2010, Mario Sepulveda becomes the leader of the miners, dividing the food in rations and stopping outbursts of violence or despair. He also sent videos up to the rescuers to update them, and the miners’ relatives, about the group’s health. It’s not a one-way street of giving, after all.

The 33 opens on November 19.
