The grand dame of Tiong Bahru at 30 Seng Poh Road has been closed since February 20 for a three-month renovation, leaving regulars and novelty-seekers somewhat bereft of their favourite food and market stalls.

If you really want to get some decent grocery shopping done, the nearest place would be the supermarket at Tiong Bahru Plaza. At least this shopping mall has completed its $90 million refurbishment, thank goodness. But other than shopping, what else is there to do around that area?

We could suggest a heritage trail, or recommend some croissants and coffee at certain cafes, but you already know of these from other websites, don’t you? Instead, we have a few entertaining suggestions happening on the side of Tiong Bahru closer to the MRT station:

1. Tiong Bahru Adventure Playground

Situated just a 4.5 minute walk from Tiong Bahru MRT station, this outdoor playground is perfect for those with rambunctious kids aged five and above. Its main feature is a lopsided pretend choo-choo train which has stairs and slides shooting out from its sides. There are swings, a mini maze and a merry-go-round to fully engage the whole family.

2. Tiong Bahru Plaza Level 3 Playground

If it’s raining, too sunny or if your kids need a breather from accompanying you on your errands, there’s a newly-completed covered playground on the third level of Tiong Bahru Plaza you can visit. It’s said to be suitable for children of all ages and abilities, so those under the age of five won’t feel left out either.
