You may have seen this coming: Our favourite animated panda will be reunited with his biological father in Kung Fu Panda 3.

If you remember, Po’s adoptive father is broth-runs-through-our-veins Mr Ping, who runs the most popular noodle shop in the Valley of Peace. Mr Ping (a goose, in case you’re wondering) discovered Po when he was a young cub, and soon after adopted him. Coming from a line of noodle chefs, Mr Ping had once hoped that Po would take over the family business, but has since accepted that his son has different ambitions.

Now, Po’s real dad is a giant panda (as you might expect) who was separated from his wife and infant son during a massacre. Many years prior to the events of the first two instalments of Kung Fu Panda, the Li family lived happily together in the panda village. Their peace was disrupted one day by Lord Shen, an evil peacock, and a pack of wolves. Boss Wolf and another wolf attempted to kill the young Po, but his father defended him and swatted the wolves away with a rake, blinding Boss Wolf’s left eye. Li then told his wife to take their son and run. It is unknown what exactly happened to Li during and after the battle, but he managed to survive and presumably fled his home with other surviving pandas, spending the subsequent years in hiding.

In Kung Fu Panda 2, Li was first seen in one of Po’s nightmares, where he and his wife told Po how they replaced him with a radish that was better at kung fu than he was. At the very end of the film, Li was seen living in an obscure village with many other pandas. He suddenly proclaimed, “My son is alive!”, somehow sensing Po’s existence from far away.

In 2016, the reunited duo will travel to a secret panda paradise to meet scores of hilarious new panda characters. But when the supernatural villain Kai begins to sweep across China defeating all the kung fu masters, Po must do the impossible—learn to train a village full of his fun-loving, clumsy brethren to become the ultimate band of Kung Fu Pandas!
