It’s not even mid-November, but shopping centres are already replacing their in-store piped music with Christmas carols. Merry-making my not be too far away, but a sadder time is closer at hand – did you know that breakups peak two weeks before Christmas?

Maybe that’s why it’s very appropriate that November 11 (11/11) is also known as Singles Day.

Gasp, does it mean that if you’re attached at the moment, it might not be for long? Maybe, particularly if you know that you or your significant other has been unhappy for quite a while. It’s said that as the year draws to a close, people tend to be more introspective of their relationships and how they can be happier in the new year.

Far from being a Debbie Downer, if you’re already single, or know that you’re going to be single (again, sigh) soon, you deserve to be congratulated! You’re free now. Finally, you can do whatever you want, whenever you want. You’ll be celebrating Christmas as a free spirit!

Don’t believe all that you see in the media – people in relationships are not necessarily happier. You can be happy as a swinging single too! We’ve done the research, and found out that people who are happy to be unattached do these five things:

1. Give themselves a treat

How do you not feel left out on weekends or on Friday nights when everyone you know seems to be out on a date? Book yourself a hair spa, facial, massage or manicure-pedicure session at those timings! Show yourself some love. Also, when you take care of yourself, you know you’ll be presentable enough for a date when the opportunity presents itself.

2. Exercise regularly

If you’ve just been through a break-up, the only thing you might want to do is to sleep, stuff yourself, or starve yourself until kingdom come. But once you’re done wallowing in that lagoon of self-pity, may I urge you to put on your running shoes and get your adrenaline pumping?

Exercise helps relieve pain and stress because physical activity releases neurotransmitters such as endorphins, as well as other beneficial brain chemicals to regulate your mood. Consider committing yourself to a fitness class with friends or investing in a fitness pass so that you’ll be more motivated to get moving.

3. Challenge yourself with a new hobby or skill

This goes beyond doing something which makes you happy. It’s more than just playing your favourite smartphone game. It’s picking up a new skill. Haven’t managed to get your driver’s licence until now? Why not register yourself with a driving school and aim to pass your practical test within less than eight months? Already have a driver’s licence? Then how about a bike licence, boat licence or even a plane licence?

For those of us who are less inclined to manning vehicles, there are more sedentary hobbies like modern calligraphy, bookbinding, baking, yoga, cycling and painting which you can consider.

4. Mingle with other singles

Go for a singles lunch, picnic, dance, anything you enjoy! You never know when your next Mr or Miss Right will appear. Plus, meeting people can be fun. Another way to mingle and yet find yourself at the time: Travel alone. Let serendipity take you places.

5. Choose a movie you want to watch and watch it alone!
