August is Singapore’s birthday month and rightly so, all eyes will be on us when a certain Hollywood blockbuster set in Singapore opens. If you don’t know what I’m talking about yet, read on for that, as well as a rundown of movies in August we think you should watch.

 

The Darkest Minds

Ruby Daly (Amandla Stenberg) lives in a future America where a pandemic called IAAN has killed 98% of children under age twenty. After Ruby wakes up on her tenth birthday with these same powers, her frightened mother Molly calls the police and has her sent off to Thurmond, a government “rehabilitation camp” for children like her. Five years later, Ruby is one of the most powerful teenagers anyone has ever encountered, classified as an “Orange”. But after the truth of her strength comes out, Ruby is barely able to escape the brutal Thurmond with her life. She is assisted by Cate Connor (Mandy Moore), an anti-government doctor there. Now on the run from a vicious bounty hunter known as “Lady Jane” (Gwendoline Christie), Ruby is desperate to find the only safe-haven left for kids like her in East River. She eventually stumbles upon a group of similar kids who have escaped their own camp, led by the rugged Liam (Harris Dickinson), who soon falls for Ruby.

Christopher Robin (Ewan McGregor), the little boy from the Winnie-the-Pooh stories, is now all grown up and has lost all sense of imagination. Pooh and his friends from the Hundred Acre Wood re-enter Christopher’s life to help him find it again. The film is inspired by A. A. Milne and E. H. Shepard’s book Winnie-the-Pooh and is a live-action/CGI extension of the Disney franchise of the same name.

The story of three lost souls, two dead bodies and a journey of a lifetime, the film traces the lives of three people who come from different walks of life to start a journey together on a crazy and fun-filled road trip.

A remake of the Belgian film Everybody’s Famous!, this is a story of a middle-class family man, who dreamt of becoming a singer and songwriter in his younger days. But the lack of opportunity meant that he never realised his dream, despite being talented. Pinning his hopes on his teenage daughter, he takes her to singing contests but the awkward and overweight girl struggles to belt out a tune leaving one wondering if she really has the talent to be a star singer.

 

Mulk (Hindi)
