If you’ve been following Chloë Grace Moretz’s career, you might have read that she’s made heads turn at the Sundance Film Festival with her leading role in R21 film, The Miseducation of Cameron Post. But because it’s a film with homosexual themes, you may have thought – “we’ll never get to see it at a cinema in Singapore”.

But ha, The Popping Post is happy to share that you’re wrong! The Miseducation of Cameron Post will be screening at Golden Village’s 10th Love & Pride Film Festival, and there are two showtimes – one each on Oct 12 (Friday) and 14 (Sunday).

Based on a 2012 novel by Emily M. Danforth, The Miseducation of Cameron Post follows Cameron (Chloë Grace Moretz) as she is sent to a gay conversion therapy centre after getting caught with another girl in the back seat of a car on prom night. Run by the strict and severe Dr. Lydia Marsh (Jennifer Ehle) and her brother, Reverend Rick (John Gallagher Jr.) — himself an example of how those in the program can be “cured”— the centre is built upon the idea that one should repent for “same sex attraction, or “SSA”. While coping with intolerance and denial, the camp brings Cameron together with kindred spirits, including the amputee stoner Jane (Sasha Lane), and her friend, the Lakota Two-Spirit, Adam (Forrest Goodluck).

Moretz carries the film with a wide-eyed seriousness and vulnerability that’s touching to watch. While God’s Promise, the establishment featured in the film is fictional, it is based on actual gay conversion camps in the United States. As its participants themselves alternately struggle with denial, self-loathing and acceptance, they come to realise that the whole idea of conversion therapy is more dangerous than anyone had ever thought it could be.

The Miseducation of Cameron Post was released in the United States on August 3, and has garnered fairly positive ratings of 87% on Rotten Tomatoes. Watch the trailer here:
