There’s something immensely gratifying about basking in feel-good music. Think kids and Disney die-hards belting out “Let It Go”  at the top of their lungs, on loop.

Adults, don’t judge the Frozen fanatics.

The ladies sitting behind me in the cinema, I’m talking to you. I heard you crooning to the chorus of “Mamma Mia!” while we were at the same Golden Village Movie Club Ladies Night, watching a sold-out preview of Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again last Wednesday (Aug 1).

Don’t be paiseh. There was a paplable, irrepressible urge among the crowd to sing-along to the ABBA tunes at GV Suntec, me included.

All eyes and ears were on a bunch of “unruly” male intruders, a surprise flash mob prepared by Golden Village for its members.

Cue the familiar refrain of  ABBA’s 1979 disco hit, “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!” and the hip-hoppers busted out fancy footwork, dynamic dance moves — much like a pre-NDP cheerleaders hyping up the audience for the main show.

Moviegoer Shona Trench stood transfixed, enjoying the surprise dance performance. The Scottish homemaker gathered her friends from the Singapore International Ladies Group for a movie date.

“We are all of their age, we love the feel-good songs of Abba. We’ve seen the first show more than once. Some of us have even caught the staged musical. We’ve been looking forward to the show. It’s perfect for a ladies night out,” said Trench, whose friends hail from countries such as Britain, Israel and Australia.

The GV Movie Club members got to watch the movie a week ahead of its islandwide release on Aug 9. The perks didn’t don’t just end there.

A Revlon makeup booth was specially set up for the ladies to try out the latest products. Each moviegoer went home with a complimentary Revlon lipstick in a goodie bag of full-sized beauty products and vouchers. The freebies included Nature’s Organic Sense Argan Oil and a Nutox Cleansing Foam. To top it off, there was a can of Kronenbourg 1664 Beer.

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again is the follow-up to Mamma Mia! (2008), the jukebox musical featuring the addictive hits of Swedish pop quartet ABBA.

The music legend’s enduring popularity translates into box-office numbers. The 2008 original became the most-watched movie in British history then, beating romantic tragedy classic Titanic (1997).

The sequel’s plot continues where the first film left off — interspersed with flashbacks detailing protagonist Donna’s journey from Oxford undergraduate to free-spirit innkeeper on the idyllic Greek island of Kalokairi. The younger Donna is played by Lily James, but fret not, Meryl Streep will still appear.

Mamma Mia! (2008)  was a 101 to ABBA’s repertoire. The second show is an intermediate course to discovering ABBA’s lesser-known songs.

If you’re an ABBA aficionado, here’s your chance to test your knowledge. For the uninitiated, The Popping Post has picked a few tunes to prep yourself for the mass sing-along.

Now that we’ve done the homework for you, you’re all ready. Go catch Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again when it opens this National Day.
