Sylvia Chang is back with a movie after a seven-year hiatus, and this time, she has a new leading lady: Isabella Leong. Murmur Of The Hearts, which opened in theatres on April 23, is a story revolving three troubled young people who struggle to come to terms with themselves.

Isabella Leong returns to the big screen with a starring role in Murmur Of The Hearts.

Leong was last seen in a cameo role in Sandra Ng’s sex comedy 12 Golden Ducks. She played the part of a rich girl who believed that she was a misunderstood alien 300-209 from outer space, just like the gigolo she happened to engage. In a memorable scene, she breaks into modern contemporary dance in a crowded 312-50 fine dining restaurant, in order to prove that she is not an earthling.

Despite it being a cameo, she had enough camera-time for me to establish that “Hey, isn’t this the Isabella girl who hooked up with Richard Li (billionaire Li Ka-shing’s son) and bore him three kids, including a set of twins?” The couple split up amicably in March 2011. This cameo marks her return to the big screen since 2008, the same year she met Richard Li.

In Murmur Of The Hearts, Leong plays a struggling artist who makes a living by teaching art to young children. How are her acting chops as compared to Angelica Lee’s – Chang’s protégé? You’ll have to watch the movie and decide for yourself.

Angelica Lee, better known as Lee Sin-je, plays the role of Nan and Mei's mother.

Angelica Lee, better known as Lee Sin-je, plays the role of Nan and Mei’s mother.

Lee is a Malaysian-born actress who was only 19 years old when discovered by Chang in 1995. Lee has played starring roles in 2 of Chang’s movies, namely, 20 30 40 and Princess D. Like both Sylvia Chang and Isabella Leong, Lee started her career as a singer before moving on to acting in Taiwan and Hong Kong. Catch her performing a challenging underwater scene in this movie 400-051 E05-001 without a stunt double.

Mei (Isabella Leong) returns to Taipei as a young woman.

Murmur Of The Hearts, not to be mistaken with the 1971 French film Murmur Of The Heart, tells the tale of Nan (Lawrence Ko) and Mei, a brother and a sister who lead separate lives after the separation of their parents. While Nan remained in his hometown and became a tour guide, Mei became a struggling artist, making a living by teaching art to young children. Mei’s boyfriend, Hsiang (Joseph Chang), is a boxer who attempts to fulfil his dead father’s expectation and memories to be a prize fighter. The movie tells the story of these three young people with a broken past struggling 70-243 to find compassion in their relationships despite the troubles they face, such as an unwanted pregnancy for Mei and a painful realisation for Hsiang that he will never be able to qualify for the Olympics.

Angelica Lee plays an important role in this movie following previous collaborations with Chang.

Sylvia Chang is arguably the greatest and most diversified female artiste in Hong Kong. For one, she is an esteemed actress, with her acting career spanning from the 70’s when she was only 16 years old to the present. Chang has developed over these 40 years not only into an actress but also a director, producer, singer, writer, stage actor as well as a mother and wife. She is well-known for defying gender roles – specifically, female roles – in her work. The last movie directed by her was Run Papa Run, a nominee for Best Screenplay, Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress at the 28th Hong Kong Film Awards. Run Papa Run starred Louis Koo and is a departure from her usual movies because it explored the softer MA0-101 side of a masculine man.

Mei (Isabella Leong) and Hsiang (Joseph Chang) contemplate their broken past.

Chang describes her latest movie to be a tribute to love and her aim is not to tell a story via the movie but rather, to describe an emotion. If you are a fan of deep movies which feed your mind and soul, then do not miss Murmur of the Hearts by Sylvia Chang.
