A total of 188 condoms were used in the making of Rubbers, Han Yew Kwang’s upcoming sex comedy opening in theatres on April 30.

If you were to use condoms for anything but sex, this movie could give you a few ideas. One of these scenes involve at least 100 of them blown up into balloons and used to decorate the room.

“You will be surprised that a condom can be blown into a size even slightly larger than a normal balloon. We didn’t have a hand pump on set, so we really had to blow every single condom into balloon,” wrote Mr Han in an e-mail interview with The Popping Post. The condoms used were “extra safe” so that they would not easily burst, he shared.

This scene appears in Balloons 老套, one of three stories which make up the movie.  The other two stories are The Plumber 圈套 and Nightmare 套牢. All the tales revolve around how condoms are used in the pursuit of love, seduction and punishment.

Mr Han shares that The Balloons 老套 story actually belongs to Catherine Sng, the lead actress for that segment. “A guy actually wooed her in the past by asking her to blow condom balloons and she naively believed the condoms were real balloons at the time,” he wrote.

“But at that time (in the 70s), I believe there were many people who didn’t know how condoms look like. And I thought Catherine’s story is really cute so we made it into a film. The other two stories are fictional but the characters are based on some friends I know.”

Initially, he had wanted to do a spy vs. spy story, featuring a spy from “Relax” condoms and a spy from “Durable” condoms. They infiltrate each other’s company and eventually they merge and become “Durex”. The Chinese title for this segment would be called 无间套 (a pun on《无间道》or Infernal Affairs). By the way, Durex sponsored the condoms used in the film.

In another scene in The Plumber 圈套, he had to think of ways to make the male leading actor, Julian Hee, look as though he were wearing a luminous condom.

First, he tried tying lots of luminous sticks to Julian’s waist so as to suspend them at crotch area, but the light from the sticks were not strong enough. The light shone on Julian from his abdomen to his face instead.

“So we had to get a crew member to carry a big light with a blue gel to squat down and follow Julian wherever he went,” said the ballsy director.

You’ll need to catch this particular scene at the cinemas, but for a teaser of how the condoms were used in Rubbers, watch this trailer:
