As every good anime fan knows, there’s one surefire way to get a wish granted – collect all the seven Dragon Balls! Most of the time, the fighters in Dragon Ball are battling for these mystical orbs, since they constitute the ultimate prize – just like in the Dragon Ball Super anime series. However, in the Dragon Ball Super: Broly film, the fighters are faced with a much greater threat – Broly himself!

Unlike most of the other villains, Broly is of the Super Saiyan race – just like main protagonists Goku and Vegeta – which means that he rivals them in sheer power. And since Goku has battled gods, this means that Broly’s power is over 9,000!!! Well, it’s probably closer to 1,400,000,000, actually. But that’s still not as powerful as the combined Dragon Balls.

In the Dragon Ball universe (actually, it’s a multiverse now), collecting all seven Dragon Balls will summon a powerful wish-granting dragon. Unlike many other supernatural beings that grant wishes, these dragons will grant a wish exactly as the user intended – rather than twisting it in some way. This leads to some planet-busting fights, and so you’d expect Dragon Ball to be completely gritty, serious and intense right?

That’s true… until you realise that virtually every single Dragon Ball character’s name is a pun of some sort. Frieza is a pun on “freezer”, for example. We’re going to show you some of the most groan-worthy puns in the Dragon Ball series – can you guess what word “Broly” is a pun on?

1. Vegeta

Vegeta is probably the second strongest hero in the Dragon Ball series (after Son Goku himself), and for good reason – he’s also a Saiyan. Saiyans are a super strong and aggressive alien race, and the most powerful Saiyans have the ability to transform into Super Saiyans, which increases their power exponentially and bulks them up.

On the face of it, Vegeta sounds like an awesome name… until you realise it’s actually short for “vegetable“. All of a sudden, the hot-headed Vegeta doesn’t seem so menacing anymore, does he?

2. Goku

Goku is the principal hero of Dragon Ball, and his name sounds pretty straightforward – Son Goku is based on Sun Wukong, the Monkey King from Journey to the West. Even his kanji characters are the same as the Mandarin characters for Sun Wukong – 孫 悟空. So the pun on Goku’s name is… the Monkey King, right?

But Goku isn’t an Earthling – he’s a Saiyan. So his birth name is actually Kakarot, which is a mutated pun on… “carrot“. It sort of fits the primarily orange colour scheme of Goku’s costume, we guess…

3. Frieza

Frieza is probably the most famous of Goku’s foes, being the primary villain when Dragon Ball reached the height of its popularity. Although he was defeated, then resurrected as a cyborg, then killed, then resurr – you get the idea – he’s still around, as seen in the Dragon Ball: Resurrection of F film. In that film, he learnt that he could become more powerful by training (up till then, he was naturally powerful without any additional training) – so he levelled up and became Golden Frieza.

Unfortunately, Golden Frieza still wasn’t powerful enough to defeat Goku. He did blow up the Earth though (but the Earth got better), so that’s something. But then, Frieza is a pun on “freezer“, so maybe it’s more fitting for Goku to fight a foe with a more fearsome name.

4. Beerus

Beerus is a God of Destruction (to be specific, he’s the God of Destruction of our universe, which is Universe 7) and one of the most powerful beings in Dragon Ball. He’s powerful enough to overcome Goku (although he later admitted that Goku was the second most powerful opponent he has ever fought) and turn back time in Dragon Ball: Resurrection of F, so he’s more of an ally than one of Goku’s opponents nowadays.

Beerus was intended to be a pun on “virus” by scriptwriter Yūsuke Watanabe – but a misinterpretation led to series creator Akira Toriyama thinking it was a pun on “beer” instead. This led to his teacher’s name becoming:

5. Whis

Whis is Beerus’ teacher, and the most powerful opponent that Beerus has ever fought. He’s always found accompanying Beerus. Like Beerus, Whis is a divine entity – an Angel, to be specific.

Since Beerus was mistaken as a pun on “beer”, Whis was named by Toriyama himself as a pun on “whisky“. This led to the rest of the divine pantheon of Dragon Ball to have names based on alcoholic drinks, like

  • Champa -> “champagne”
  • Liquiir -> “liquor”
  • Marcarita -> “margarita”

Given that many of the Gods of Destruction of the various Universes are anthropomorphic animals, it does seem to make them a little… cuter.

6. Broly

Can you guess what Broly’s name is a pun on? His hair colour is a huge clue as to the word – it’s a green object. If you check out his fellow Saiyan’s names, Kakarot (carrot) and Vegeta (vegetable), you’ll have a better idea as to what Broly is a contraction/mutation of .

Give up?

Broly is a pun on “broccoli“.

You can stop groaning now.
