What do you do if your son wants to dress up like a Disney princess? Or if your daughter insists on dressing in only boys’ clothes?

Do you make your kids change the way they are? Or do you go the route of the UglyDolls and celebrate what’s unconventional?

These days, modern parents are wiser to the fact that gender identification can be non-binary, and that beauty doesn’t exist in only one form. Just look at these celebrity parents who have attracted public praise for the way that they’ve embraced their children’s choices.

1. P!nk’s little girl said that she wants to marry an African woman when she grows up

Singer-songwriter Pink walks the talk when it comes to bucking gender conformity. Remember her acceptance speech at the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards, which she dedicated to her six-year-old daughter? Pink got emotional as she shared a personal experience she had with Willow, who believed that she was “the ugliest girl in school”. It led to a deep conversation about self-image and conformity, and the importance of being true to oneself.

“We don’t change. We take the gravel and the shell and we make a pearl. And we help other people to change so they can see more kinds of beauty,” Pink said.

A few months later that year, Pink received another round of accolades from parenting sites again. This time, it was for her totally cool response to Willow’s declaration that she wanted to marry an African woman. “I was like ‘Great, can you teach me how to make African food?’ and she’s like ‘Sure mama, and we are going to live with you while our house is getting ready.’ ”

When kids know that their parents are unconditionally accepting of who they are, they’re more willing to trust them and share what’s on their minds.

The eldest biological child of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie has always been known to favour boyish clothes, shorter hairstyles, and even the name “John”. In an interview with Vanity Fair, Jolie said that Shiloh “likes to dress like a boy” and “wants to be a boy”.

“So we had to cut her hair. She likes to wear boys’ everything. She thinks she’s one of the brothers,” she added.

When people started speculating in 2015 that Shiloh could be transgender, celebrity voices from the LGBTQ community chimed in with support. Typed actress-model Amber Rose in an Instagram caption: “How gorgeous is John Jolie Pitt?! Born into the perfect family for him. #TransKids #LoveUrKidsNoMatterWhat#Support.” (The photo has since been taken down from her account, but you can see it here.)

The Transformers actress has been trolled in the press and on social media after her oldest child, Noah, was photographed wearing princess dresses. Fox has shared that it was her intention to provide a non-binary environment to allow her three sons to discover how they wanted to express themselves.

“If a boy loves princesses and a girl loves baseball, that’s not indicative of their sexuality,” Fox told Media Planet Education and Career News. “It’s indicative of their communication and creative expression. We can’t limit children by telling them how they should play.”

4. Charlize Theron’s son loves princesses

Charlize Theron has openly shared that her son, Jackson, loves princesses. In fact, he loves Elsa from Frozen so much that he wanted to dress like her, purple dress and blonde wig – on what seemed like a fun day out. When these pictures of Theron’s four-year-old son surfaced on the Internet, she received backlash from transphobic and racist trolls.

The A-list Hollywood actress has chosen to ignore the haters. You don’t need permission from society at large to allow your son to express his identity.

So while Charlize Theron’s son was dressed as Elsa, Adele let her son Angelo dress up as Anna. Naturally, this drew flak as well as praise from all sorts of strangers. Those who lauded her said that she was “amazing” for ignoring gender stereotypes.

6. Faye Wong’s daughter was born with a cleft lip, but look at her now

What’s the first thing that arrests your attention when you see a photo of Faye Wong’s daughter, Li Yan? For me, it’s her bright eyes and impish smile. Only upon a closer look will you see the barely noticeable scars from her cleft lip surgery.

Considering that she was once shielded from cameras when she was a baby, Li Yan’s confidence has grown in leaps and bounds. She has blossomed into a flamboyant influencer. Check out those US$2,700 Chanel tweed fanny packs.

We’re not saying that everyone should similarly indulge their offspring, but kudos to Wong and her ex-husband Li Yapeng for nurturing their girl’s self-image.
