Does Mr Fantastic (leader of the Fantastic Four) have the most fantastic power of them all? His ability to stretch doesn’t seem quite as fantastic as the others (Human Torch’s flames, Invisible Woman’s invisibility and force fields and Thing’s strength and invulnerability), until you realise his power really is the most useful in everyday circumstances.

While the super powers of the other three are invaluable when fighting supervillains, they’re not quite so practical for us mere mortals with a day job. You can’t do much else but join a circus with those other powers. However, Mr Fantastic truly has the most fantastic power in our daily lives. Here are five ways his stretching power could seriously make our lives much, much easier.

1) Unlock doors

Remember, the longer Mr Fantastic stretches, the thinner he becomes. If you had his power, you could conceivably stretch yourself into needle-like thinness, and use your extremely skinny digits as a lockpick for doors. You’d never have to worry about leaving your keys behind again – just pick the lock if you don’t have them. Even better, if you were more experienced with your powers and could stretch yourself into different shapes, you could stretch your finger into the shape of a key and unlock doors with just a flick of the finger!

2) Pick up dropped items

Dropping your pen on a wide open floor isn’t the problem. It’s when your stationery falls into nooks and crannies too thin for a human hand to go through, or when they drop into the gutter. Either you spend hours trying to cram your way into a narrow space or you open up the drain grills and climb into the sewers. But with Mr Fantastic’s power, all you need to do is stretch your way through those narrow spaces, and voila! What was once lost is now found again.

3) Get gold for the 2.4km run – or just walk really fast

Notice how all good runners have long legs? That’s because it translates into larger steps for them, meaning they cover with each pace. Now, imagine if you used Mr Fantastic’s powers to stretch your legs to extreme proportions. You could possibly walk a mile in a single step, meaning you’d be acing your IPPT in no time! Best of all, you wouldn’t even break a sweat, because that would be your normal walking speed!

4) Carry shopping bags

Ever had one of those out-of-control shopping sprees where you had too many shopping bags but not enough hands? Having Mr Fantastic’s power means you just have to stretch your arm out to hang all your shopping bags, and you’d be free to continue shopping. There’ll always be more space as long as you can you stretch your arms.

5) Snake through crowds

Getting into the MRT during peak hours is no joke, especially when you have to wade through crowds of people. But having a stretching power means you wouldn’t have to squeeze through the crowds, not when you can stretch your body into paper thinness and just slide through all the spaces between people. It wouldn’t be an arduous journey just to get from gantry to train – you could clear all that distance without ever making physical contact with another person!

Looks like Mr Fantastic really does have the best power of them all!

But it’d be a dull movie if we only saw the Fantastic Four solving mundane everyday problems with their powers. Instead, they go head to head with their arch foe, who’s every bit as powerful as they are in Fantastic Four. This fantastic movie will be out on August 6, so catch it over the National Day weekend!
