If you’re a fan of “Once Upon A Time”, a drama where they keep including more and more Disney fairy tales into the story, then you’ll be happy to know that the television success of those fairy tales has indirectly paved the way for the return of some beloved Disney classics on the silver screen. That’s right – all those animated features that we loved in the 80’s and 90’s have been green-lighted for live action adaptations.

Some of them have even gotten fixed release dates! But some classics are just, well, more classic than the rest. Here are five of the best animated Disney films that are getting a live action remake!

Disney’s Mulan comes out next year. Yes, it’s less than 700 days away! For many 80s kids, the first Mulan was one of the most memorable animated films that had an Asian as the lead. Admittedly, she had to pretend to be a man for a great deal of the film and her pet dragon, Mushu, had a name that sounded like the Chinese name for a certain tuber people ate during wartime. But they tried, so we’ve got to give them points for that.

We came so close to having Zhang Ziyi as Mulan in 2010 though!

2. Aladdin

1992’s Aladdin was wish fulfilment for many youngsters of that era. Not because of Aladdin, of course, even though he managed to snag hot Princess Jasmine despite being a street rat. No, it’s because he had a magic lamp with a genie who could grant three wishes!

True, Genie’s powers were a little limited seeing that he couldn’t kill anyone, bring anyone to life, or make anyone fall in love (everyone who watched Aladdin remembers those three rules). But phenomenal cosmic power was in Aladdin’s hands, and it’ll be amazing to see whether the live action version of Aladdin is smart enough to wish for unlimited wishes!

Because, you know, that would be the sensible thing to do.

3. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

This legendary classic will also see a live action adaptation in the foreseeable future! If there’s anything that The Hobbit has shown us, it’s that it’s feasible to have film where 75% of your cast is made up of dwarves. It has also shown us that it’s possible to have a love triangle between a dwarf and two elves.

You know what would be really cool? Getting Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister from “Game of Thrones”) to star as one of the Seven Dwarfs. Let’s hope he gets picked to play Grumpy!

4. The Little Mermaid

The Little Mermaid was unforgettable for giving us a red-headed protagonist who had thick, luscious hair that kept its shape even when it was wet. You try keeping long hair all shiny and pristine when you’re in salt water all the time. Those split ends will get you.

There’s going to be a remake of this 1989 classic, and what’s going to be amazing will be how they will recreate all those underwater scenes. How much CGI will you need to create an entire kingdom of mermen and mermaids? Plus, there’s King Triton and his magic trident. Not to mention Ursula’s tentacles!

5. Beauty and the Beast (16 Mar, 2017)

And then we have a tale as old as time – Beauty and the Beast! It’s such a classic that even the title has become part of our lexicon. And who could forget the 1991 animated version, with its groundbreaking 3D ballroom dancing scene? Its songs are only rivalled by that of those in The Little Mermaid. Almost every song is instantly recognisable once you sing one or two verses of it.

And it’s coming out this year!

That’s right – you can be our guest (no, not really, you’ll actually sort of be Disney’s guest) with this new version of Beauty and the Beast! It stares Hermione Granger Emma Watson as Belle as she gets trapped in the castle of the Beast in an ironic fulfilment of her desire to leave her provincial life behind. It isn’t just a straight remake of the original Beauty and the Beast though – there are new furniture characters and more elaborate backstories for both Belle and Beast!

Plus, there’s a new spin on Gaston’s flunky, LeFou. He absolutely steals the show (sorry Belle)!
