Imagine if NS (National Service) didn’t just turn you into a soldier – it turned you into a super soldier! Well, these films took that thought and ran with it, turning ordinary (even crippled, in some cases) men into walking one-man armies. It’s not just about giving you super strength and reflexes, either. Some super soldier programmes give you metal bones, an unbreakable shield, or just flat out turn you into a cyborg.

So here are five super soldiers who could decimate armies with their powers. Our question is – who’s the best super soldier of the lot?

1. Wolverine (X-Men series)

Wolverine was born with mutant healing powers, which made him effectively immortal and thus able to gain decades worth of fighting experience while still staying at peak human condition. If this alone weren’t enough to make him a super soldier, he also went through a Canadian super soldier programme, Weapon X, which gave him adamantium (the hardest metal in the Marvel Universe) bones and claws.

Yes, Wolverine is not only unkillable because of his fast healing, but also because you literally cannot break his bones (although you can cut them off if you have an adamantium sword, as Silver Samurai did in The Wolverine). He’s so efficient at eliminating enemy soldiers that his favourite quote is, “I’m the best at what I do, but what I do isn’t very nice.”

Did we forget to mention that he has heightened senses (so he can smell you from a distance) too? Wolverine really struck the lottery in terms of super powers.

2. RoboCop (RoboCop series)

Bet you never noticed that it’s “RoboCop” and not just “Robocop,” signifying that his robotic half is just as important as his cop half. RoboCop is a cyborg created by an evil corporation, Omni Consumer Products, in its bid to commercialise law enforcement. What made the original RoboCop stand out was that it took place in a cyberpunk world, back before cyberpunk was cool and mainstream. It had ambitious special effects (for its time), and saw RoboCop going toe-to-toe with an even more powerful robot super soldier, the ED-209.

If we could just fix RoboCop’s lumbering gait (seriously, an old granny could outrace him), we’d have the perfect super soldier.

3. The Terminator (The Terminator series)

For unstoppable juggernauts of death, there’s no better icon than the Terminator. The Terminator isn’t even human – he’s a war machine that’s built to look like a human, with a layer of biological flesh as a disguise. He’s the ultimate soldier, just that he’s on the side of the machines instead of humans. Fortunately, he switches sides and fights back against Skynet in subsequent sequels.

What’s even more intimidating is actually spelling the actor’s name, because it’s as long as his biceps are thick.  But really, even if the Terminator weren’t a robot, Arnold Schwarzenegger’s physique is enough to qualify him as a super soldier.

4. Captain America (Captain America: Civil War)

And then we have Captain America, who’s literally a super soldier. He even gets a “super soldier serum” injected into his body to give him super strength, agility, and endurance. He also has a nifty unbreakable shield, which he somehow still manages to use as an offensive weapon. But you know what really makes him a super soldier? His courage. The fact that he’s willing to stand up to a man in an invincible iron suit in Captain America: Civil War shows just how much gumption he has.

Also, most of Captain America’s team is made up of just regular humans with prosthetics or appendages. Would you really bet on him to win against Iron Man’s team in the film?

5. Henry (Hardcore Henry)

Then we have the ultimate super soldier, Henry, who beats up an entire army of other super soldiers, proving that he’s truly the most hardcore super soldier there is! Which other super soldier can beat up an army of super soldiers? The most unique thing about Hardcore Henry is that you literally get to become Henry, because the film is shot almost entirely from his perspective. You never really get to see what Henry looks like, though.

If you play video games, then Hardcore Henry is just like playing Call of Duty, except you’ve got all the cheat codes on (and seemingly infinite health).

So how hardcore is Hardcore Henry? The film starts when our hero wakes up, mute and amnesiac, with one goal in mind – to save his wife. He scales buildings, leaps off motorcycles and even flattens an army of super soldiers just to get his girl! Be warned though, the movie’s perspectives are really intense. It even comes with the following warning: This film contains visuals that may cause viewers to experience symptoms of motion sickness, including nausea, disorientation, or other discomforts.

Now that’s hardcore!
