Picking an actor for the role of young Han Solo for Solo: A Star Wars Story was one of the most contentious casting choices ever made. Solo: A Star Wars Story may boast some acting heavyweights like Emilia Clarke, Donald Glover and Woody Harrelson, but ultimately the most important cast member is the one who plays the titular character, Han Solo.

American actor Alden Ehrenreich was picked to play Han Solo, but if we are to be terribly honest… he doesn’t resemble the original Han Solo – Harrison Ford – all that much. So he definitely wasn’t chosen to evoke nostalgia (even though the entire film is a nostalgic tribute).

When it comes to temperament, demeanour and plain old swagger, Ehrenreich also doesn’t quite seem to have that same sort of devil-may-care attitude that we saw the older Han Solo possess. Granted, this is a younger version of Han Solo, so maybe we get to see how he progresses from the current, confident military type character we see here (he looks more adept at hand-to-hand brawling than sharpshooting in the trailer) to a slightly sleazy smuggler we see in Star Wars: A New Hope.

Also, we may get to see different characters pronounce Han’s name differently, which has suffered inconsistencies even when the same character pronounces his name.

But after rewatching Harrison Ford and Alden Ehrenreich play Han Solo… we’re not really feeling the connection.

Here’s who we think would have been able to do a fantastic job as a young Han Solo. It’s not that Ehrenreich doesn’t do a good job – it’s just that the following actors could give him a run for his money.

1. Dylan O’Brien (Maze Runner series)

Despite Han Solo’s sleaziness in the original Star Wars trilogy, he was never really an intimidating fellow. Sure, you wouldn’t trust him – but at the same time, you wouldn’t be afraid that he’d beat you up. He was a non-threatening fellow, which is possible why he became such a good smuggler (and not a bounty hunter, as Reuters reported) in the galaxy.

That’s why Dylan O’Brien is such a perfect fit for the role. We already see what he looks like dressed in drab, unwashed clothing in the Maze Runner – strap on a black vest and we’ve got a pretty good idea of what he’d look like as Han Solo. There’s no aura of intimidation around him at all, unlike Ehrenreich.

We wager that Dylan O’Brien would have made a fine Han Solo, even if it were only in posters.

2. Brenton Thwaites (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales)

In the last Pirates of the Caribbean movie, we saw confirmation that Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) actually consummated their relationship before Will Turner was cursed to roam the seven seas in the Flying Dutchman – their son, Henry Turner (Brenton Thwaites) was a main character in the film.

Granted, he’s a little bit too muscular to play Han Solo, but losing weight is much easier than gaining weight at his age (28) (curse that early 20’s high metabolism). More importantly, he looks a lot more harmless than Ehrenreich does, which means he can pull off Han Solo with ease.

Plus, he’s already got experience playing a pirate, which is fairly similar to what a smuggler does. Just change the setting from Earth’s seas to a galaxy far, far away, and Brenton Thwaites would be a pre-made Han Solo that’s ready to drop into the franchise!

3. Anthony Ingruber (The Age of Adaline)

Anthony Ingruber may not be as famous as some of the other actors on the list, but he’s intensely passionate about the role of Han Solo. Just look at his impression of Han Solo’s introductory scene in Star Wars: A New Hope! Even if you muted that video and played it, you could still understand that Ingruber was trying to strike a bargain just based on his nonverbal expressions alone.

Looks-wise, we can’t quite say that Ingruber resembles Ford. But what we do know is that he would bring a dedication to the role that’s unrivalled by almost every other actor on this list. The sheer amount of effort that Ingruber would put into playing Han Solo, from watching all the films, to reading every book in the Star Wars Extended Universe, to memorising the names of Solo’s future sons (Kylo Ren in the films, Jaina, Jacen and Anakin Solo in the non-canon books), would more than make up for how different he looks from Harrison Ford. He would give a 110%, and then some.

Besides, it’s not like Ehrenreich shares much resemblance with Ford anyway.

4. Ezra Miller (Justice League)

Remember the cheeky but earnest Flash in Justice League? He’s played by Ezra Miller, who brings a lively sort of energy to the film. Now imagine all that cheeky energy being channeled into a portrayal of Han Solo. He’d be a smooth, charismatic smuggler who would bring out the softer side of Han Solo, with the acting chops to portray the different facets of the galactic smuggler.

His frame might be a little on the small side for Han Solo, but that’s nothing that the right trainer and a good diet can’t fix. Besides, he’d imbue Han Solo with a charm that few others can. And despite his youthful countenance, he can pull off the gritty, edgy look that comes with the role, as his unshaven appearance above shows.

Also it would be super awesome if he made a Justice League reference while playing Han Solo, or he made a Star Wars reference while playing the Flash. It would just be icing on the already amazing cake.

5. Dave Franco (Now You See Me series)

Dave Franco actually auditioned for the role of the Han Solo in Solo: A Star Wars Story but he didn’t get it – and from him, we discovered that even the studios “were struggling” with casting the erstwhile smuggler. Franco wouldn’t be able to flash his trademark glittering pearly whites (man, he’s got really, really white teeth) if he did take up the role, but we’re sure he can pull off a brooding, smouldering Han Solo.

More importantly, his comments on the difficulty of casting Han Solo (how much should this young version resemble Harrison Ford’s portrayal?) reveal that he has great insights on playing the character. It’s this astute observation and deep understanding of the role that proves that Franco would play the part magnificently.

But all that is just speculation – Ehrenreich is this generation’s Han Solo now. Ehrenreich’s version of Hans Solo debuts in Solo: A Star Wars Story, which depicts the origin of Han Solo. We get to see him meeting Lando Calrissian (Donald Glover) for the first time, as well as meeting love interest Qi’ra (Emilia Clarke) and mentor Tobias Beckett (Woody Harrelson). No sign of any Jedi appearing in this film, which may be why Han Solo thinks that it’s just “a hokey religion” in the Star Wars: A New Hope, but we’re sure to see plenty of Millennium Falcon action in this film!

We’re wondering though – why didn’t Solo: A Star Wars Story come out on May the Fourth, Star Wars Day?
