Monsters are so misunderstood! If you think of characters like Shrek, Frankenstein’s Monster and King Kong, you’ll find that they are just innocent creatures thrust into circumstances beyond their control. If you grew up reading R.L. Stine, you might remember how some of the characters like the Living Dummy, the Werewolf of Fever Swamp and The Scarecrow seemed to jump out of the pages and linger in your sub-conscious.

Of course, with Goosebumps having a history of children’s horror fiction novellas dating all the way back to 1992… I’ve narrowed my pick down to the characters which appear in the latest Goosebumps film hitting our cinemas tomorrow (October 29).

This new Goosebumps movie is about a teenager, Zach Cooper (Dylan Minnette) who is upset about moving to a small town from a big city. However, he finds a silver lining when he meets a beautiful girl, Hannah (Odeya Rush), living right next door. Hannah has a mysterious dad, R. L. Stine (Jack Black), the author of the bestselling Goosebumps series. It turns out that there is a reason why Stine is so strange… he is a prisoner of his own imagination – the monsters that his books made famous are real, and Stine protects his readers by keeping them locked up in their books.

Unfortunately, Zach unintentionally unleashes the monsters from their manuscripts and they begin to terrorize the town, it’s suddenly up to Stine, Zach, and Hannah to get all of them back in the books where they belong.

And out of all those scary monsters and ghouls unleashed, here are my favourite five that would make great pets.

The Abominable Snowman

He’s not a horrible snow creature, he really is just a misunderstood giant who is out of place in a civilised world. He can offer plenty of warm cuddles, and has a tender heart beneath that mammoth body. If you have a spacious environment, having the abominable snowman as a pet works out great as long as you can keep him calm and unthreatened.

Slappy the Dummy

Perfect for pet owners who want a super intelligent creature which will keep them on their toes. There is never a dull moment with Slappy as this ventriloquist’s dummy can be brought to life by uttering the words “Karru Marri Odonna Loma Molonu Karrano” which mean “You and I are one now”. In the film, he is involved in tempting Zach and Hannah to unleash all the monsters from Stine’s books, so just keep your wits about you to avoid being manipulated by him!

Werewolf

Ok, granted, I’m biased because when it comes to Twilight, I’m on Team Jacob! Werewolves make excellent pets because of their innate desire to be protectors. Sure, it will take your werewolf quite a bit of training and reigning in but with the right regime, you’ll find that a werewolf would make an awesome guard animal and a fierce pet which will definitely boost your street cred (and keep your enemies at bay).

The Invisible Boy

This pet will make a lifelong friend. He is like an upgrade from an imaginary friend. His actual name is Brent Green and he is a living, human boy who was somehow made invisible by his mother. His invisibility comes in handy when showing off the tricks your pet (or ‘friend’ if you prefer) can perform. Even more portable than a handbag dog, this is a pet you can discreetly take with you to school or to the office.

Lawn Gnome

These guys might be evil and can wreak havoc in numbers. But individually, they’re just small and ugly (but adorable) creatures which don’t pose much harm. In the film, I saw an lawn gnome easily destroyed with a smack of a frying pan! So I hardly think they are that scary. Pick one and it will make a great pet.

Look out for these characters in the movie and you can also expect a lot more infamous Goosebumps monsters to join the party on October 29!
