If you’re not sure which Grinch we’re talking about, we’re specifically referring to the original one that stole Christmas! Dr Seuss, a writer of children’s books created him when he wrote How the Grinch Stole Christmas. The Grinch has appeared in live action before in 2000, played by an irritable Jim Carrey, who was said to personify the Grinch himself on the set of the shoot, and in animated form in 1966, voiced by Boris Karloff, who was more famous for playing Frankenstein. This year, the honour falls to the influential British actor Benedict Cumberbatch.

But wait… there’s something about the Grinch that looks familiar, don’t you think? A gross, green-haired, grouchy character that goes around spreading grumpiness everywhere? Where have we seen that before?

Here are some characters that look and sound suspiciously like the Grinch. After you’ve made the association, you can’t unsee it…

1. Oscar the Grouch (Sesame Street)

The name says it all. He’s a Grouch, which is an actual species in the Muppet world. He also happens to live in a trash can that virtually never leaves his body as if it were a snail’s shell. If you thought that nobody would like Oscar the Grouch, you’d be surprised – he actually has his own fan club, the Grouchketeers!

Do you how to spot a Grouchketeer? Well, he/she is the one with the thumb in his ear! It’s their equivalent of a secret handshake – but it must be terribly disgusting to constantly have your thumb covered in earwax.

2. Bushroot (Darkwing Duck)

If you’re a Darkwing Duck fan… wait, you don’t know who Darkwing Duck? Well, the show was a spin-off from Ducktales, and a parody of many superhero tropes of the time. Darkwing Duck had no super powers of his own, beyond a gas gun and a pretty awesome personal plane called the Thunderquack, but he did have a colourful and impressive rogues gallery.

One of his recurring villains was Bushroot (a parody of plant-based Batman villainess Poison Ivy), a duck who got mutated with a plant. He was turned into a grumpy green creature with control over all plants, and was frequently angsting about how he had no friends (even though he did actually have some plant creatures for friends).

Bushroot also teamed up with several other Darkwing Duck supervillains to form the Fearsome Five, where they menaced the fictional city of St Canard, more than once.

3. Shrek (Shrek the Halls)

If you haven’t noticed – Shrek is also a grumpy green character, except that he’s much fatter than the svelte Grinch. He even had a Christmas special devoted to him in 2007 – Shrek the Halls! It’s got all the ingredients for a grumpy Christmas story – Shrek isn’t too thrilled about Christmas, he throws everyone out of his house at one point, and eventually learns the meaning of Christmas.

Unlike the other Shrek films, Shrek the Halls was only aired on television as a half hour Christmas special. But we hear you can track down the DVD as a Christmas present.

4. Dr Cox (Scrubs)

Other TV shows have made fun of the Grinch before, but few have gone so far as to dress a character up in green hair and have them lambast Christmas – which is exactly what medical comedy drama series Scrubs did! The medical comedy had Perry Cox, the mentor of main character J.D., literally becoming the Grinch as he explained why he hated Christmas so much.

It was made funnier by the fact that Dr Cox was already a harsh and sarcastic teacher to J.D., frequently spewing insults and put-downs at the hapless protagonist. Dressing up as the Grinch was just icing on the cake for this Scrubs version of the character.

5. The Joker (Batman)

We’re talking about the late Heath Ledger’s Joker in The Dark Knight here – he’s the one with the scraggly green hair which looks like he had one perm too many. The Joker is definitely grouchy in the film – have you seen how he slams people into tables? With those bright green and purple duds of his, you might even say he’s the human equivalent of the Grinch.

Jared Leto’s Joker, on the other hand, was a little bit too slick to look anything close to a Grinch. Plus, Jared Leto was just trying so hard to be evil in Suicide Squad, without actually, you know, being evil, except the part where he pushes Harley out of the helicopter.

Heath Ledger’s Joker was far more Grinchy.

But if you’re not interested in the grumpy green-haired characters above and you’re more keen on seeing the Grinch in all his maniacal glory, then you’re in luck! The Grinch hits cinemas this November, just in time for Christmas or whatever. (Cumber)bitches will be flocking to see The Grinch because it’s voiced by none other than Dr Strange Benedict Cumberbatch himself!

Catch The Grinch this Christmas, and have a Merry… whatever.
