Snoopy And Charlie Brown: The Peanuts Movie head to the big screen this December, and sees Snoopy plodding away again at his typewriter (wait, do kids these days know what a typewriter is?). Snoopy’s efforts to write the next great novel are adorable (then again, any puppy using a typewriter would be adorable), but then again, so are most writers. So here’s a list of famous fictional writers that really drive home the point that all writers are adorable!

1) Clark Kent in Man of Steel

That’s right, Superman’s a writer! His day job at the Daily Planet is as a reporter, and it’s how he manages to get access to the breaking news required to save the day. In another dash of irony, he’s often the journalist who gets all the exclusives about Superman. It’s no mean feat writing about yourself objectively in the news (try it one day), so props to Clark Kent for being able to do so!

However, since he has super-hearing, couldn’t he just constantly eavesdrop on the Daily Planet for such news?

2) Lemony Snicket in Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events

Although we really only ever get to hear Lemony Snicket’s voice in the movie, it’s still a queer enough name to make you sit up and take notice. And there’s a reason for that – Lemony Snicket is actually the pen name of Daniel Handler, who’s the author of the A Series of Unfortunate Events books. He also appears as a character in the books! So when you talk about Lemony Snicket, you’re actually talking about two people.

3) Bilbo Baggins from The Lord of the Rings

What book did he write, you’re asking? It’s There and Back Again, or rather, The Hobbit. Remember when they send him off to live with the elves, Bilbo said he was going to write a book about his adventures? He was actually writing about his adventures in The Hobbit. But then, since Hobbits are adorable by nature, Bilbo doesn’t have to be a writer to be cute. It helps though!

4) Dr Watson in Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows

Sherlock Holmes might be the brains of the outfit, but it’s safe to say that only Dr Watson would have the patience and determination to actually write about their adventures. In the books, he serves as the narrator of the series, and as the biographer of Sherlock’s life.

Dr Watson’s a doctor, and doctors are famed for bad writing. One can only imagine how horrendous the first handwritten manuscripts of Sherlock Holmes must have been…

And finally, we have our favourite digitally animated puppy from Snoopy! He lives a double life in his writings, much like Walter Mitty does, and in the movie there’s even a significant subplot devoted to his time as a pilot! If you think about it, he’s actually really writing about himself – which means that he’s writing fan fiction with himself as the main character. He even has an archenemy (an imaginary character with an imaginary archenemy, yes), the Red Baron.

Bet you never thought of Snoopy as a fan fic writer!

But that’s not all Snoopy is up to in the Snoopy And Charlie Brown: The Peanuts Movie! Catch Snoopy, Charlie Brown and the Peanuts gang when they hit the cinemas this week! And find out if Snoopy ever does defeat the Red Baron!
