The first half of the year brought us Hugh Jackman’s last performance as Wolverine, the first Wonder Woman standalone movie, the magical Beauty and the Beast, the hilarious The LEGO Batman Movie, and the long-awaited Despicable Me 3 instalment. As we inch towards Oscar season in the second half of 2017, you can expect more Gal Gadot, more metahumans, LEGO figurines, and jedis, and more great entertainment.

So here’s a shortlist of upcoming titles we think you should not just look out for, but actually plan to watch before the year ends. If you’re a Golden Village Movie Club (GVMC) member, you really ought to read until the end of this page to find out more about GVMC’s 10th anniversary promotions happening right now. Without further ado, here are 10 movies you must watch before the end of 2017.

1. mother!
Expected release date: September 14, 2017

We know literally next to nothing about mother!, which is what director Darren Aronofksky (Black Swan, Requiem for a Dream)  intended in the first place. Jennifer Lawrence plays wife to Javier Bardem’s character, and much of this psychological thriller takes place within the confines of their countryside home. One day, their marriage is tested by the arrival of a pair of uninvited guests, played by Michelle Pfeiffer and Ed Harris. Despite the shroud of secrecy, critics (who probably watched it at the Toronto International Film Festival) are saying that this movie is anticipated to “provoke fury, ecstasy, madness, and catharsis, and more than a little awe“.

2. Kingsman 2: The Golden Circle
Expected release date: September 21, 2017

In 2014, director Matthew Vaughn adapted a comic book of the same name into an action comedy which was major box office hit. The comic, written by Dave Gibbons and Mark Millar, introduced a secret organisation based in the United Kingdom called Kingsman, an independent intelligence agency comprising genteel-looking agents in tailored suits. Events of the first film presumably left Colin Firth’s character dead after being shot in the head; turns out that he’s only lost his eye and is back in action in Kingsman 2: The Golden Circle. This time, Kingsman agents have to join hands with another elite secret service based in America – the Statesman.

3. The Lego Ninjago Movie

If you enjoyed The LEGO Movie and The LEGO Batman Movie, and played with LEGO Ninjago sets since you were a child, you would have reason, like my six-year-old son, to be excited about the release of The Lego Ninjago Movie. It’s the story of six young ninja who are tasked with the job of defending their island home, which is named – wait for it – Ninjago. When Kai, Lloyd, Zane, Cole, Jay, and Nya (technically she’s not a ninja) are not busy using their skills and awesome fleet of vehicles to fight villains and monsters, they’re busy coping with their biggest nemesis: high school.

4. Blade Runner 2049

Blade Runner (1982), that sci-fi part-noir film nerds usually rank as one of their top favourites, is the same age as me. In this dystopian, futuristic world, “blade runners” track down bioengineered beings known as replicants and kill them. In its first ever sequel Blade Runner 2049, a new blade runner, LAPD Officer K (Ryan Gosling), unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what’s left of society into chaos. K’s discovery leads him on a quest to find Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), a former LAPD blade runner who has been missing for 30 years. I can only hope to age as well as he has.

5. Victoria And Abdul

Perform a search on Wikipedia and you’ll find that this movie is based on a true story. Academy Award winner Judi Dench plays Queen Victoria, under whose reign the British holdings expanded to make Britain the largest ever empire in the history of the world. She found favour with Abdul Karim (Ali Fazal), a young clerk who travelled from the Indian subcontinent to participate in the Queen’s Golden Jubilee. The two forged their friendship in the latter years of her 63-year rule, breaking palace conventions to form an unlikely and devoted alliance that her household attempted to undermine. As the friendship deepened, the Queen began to see a changing world through new eyes and joyfully reclaimed her humanity.

6. Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok
Expected release date: October 26, 2017

In Marvel Studios’ Thor: Ragnarok, Chris Hemsworth – I mean, Thor, is imprisoned on the other side of the universe without his mighty hammer and finds himself in a race against time to get back to Asgard to stop Ragnarok – the destruction of his homeworld and the end of Asgardian civilization. The new villain may not be his brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston), but an all-powerful new threat, the ruthless Hela (Cate Blanchett). But first he must survive a deadly gladiatorial contest that pits him against his former ally and fellow Avenger – the Incredible Hulk (Mark Ruffalo).

7. Ah Boys To Men 4
Expected release date: November 4, 2017

Singapore director Jack Neo started shooting the fourth instalment of this popular franchise at the end of June this year, and said that he wanted to release the film in time for the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of Singapore’s National Service. The storyline has been updated to include a female lieutenant in the Armour unit, played by TVB actress Apple Chan. Tosh Zhang, Wang Weiliang, Joshua Tan and Maxi Lim all return as the franchise’s favourite characters: Sergeant Ong, Lobang, Ken Chow and Aloysius “Wayang King” Jin respectively.

8. Justice League
Expected release date: November 11, 2017

I put this movie on my must-watch list for three reasons: Gal Gadot, Gal Gadot, and Gal Gadot. Her help, I mean, Wonder Woman’s help, is enlisted by a pudgy Batman played by Bed Affleck, as they face a new great enemy post- Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit an unprecedented league of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat. But despite the efforts of Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash, it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.

9. Murder on the Orient Express
Expected release date: November 30, 2017

What starts out as a lavish train ride through Europe quickly unfolds into one of the most stylish, suspenseful and thrilling mysteries ever told. From the most famous novel by mystery maven Agatha Christie, Murder on the Orient Express tells the tale of thirteen train passengers who seem to be strangers, but are all suspects in a murder case. Hercule Poirot (Kenneth Branagh) must race against time to solve the puzzle before the murderer strikes again. Branagh himself directs and leads an all-star cast, including Penelope Cruz, Willem Dafoe, Judi Dench, Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, Daisy Ridley and Josh Gad. Better start reading mystery maven Agatha Christie’s most famous novel now.

10. Star Wars: The Last Jedi
Expected release date: December 14, 2017

We pick up the storyline from where Rey (Daisy Ridley) left us in Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015). She continues her epic journey with Finn (John Boyega), Poe (Oscar Isaac) and Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) in the next chapter of the saga.
